Kantha is the most popular form of embroidery practiced by rural women SHGs in Burdwan & is one of the very unique items in Burdwan District, mainly produced in Ausgram–I &Ausgram–II, Galsi–I, Ketugram & Bhatar Blocks . Kantha is a type of embroidery popular in West Bengal. The use of kantha is popular in Kantha saris traditionally worn by women in Bengal, but any garment or cloth with kantha embroidery, predominantly having a border of decorative running stitch motifs are of high demand. Kantha stitching is also used to make simple quilts, commonly known as Nakshi Kantha. In the best examples, the entire cloth is covered with running stitches, employing beautiful motifs of flowers, animals birds and geometrical shapes, as well as themes from everyday activities. The stitching on the cloth gives it a slight wrinkled, wavy effect. Contemporary Kantha is applied to a wider range of garments such as sarees, dupatta, shirts for men and women, bedding and other furnishing fabrics, mostly using cotton and silk. Its appeal exhances when kantha stitch works are mixed with batik works or mixed with stitch of various discipline. The demand of these products go beyond the state these days.
Handloom is another one of the very attractive traditional items in Burdwan District , mainly produced in Kalna –II, Purbasthali-I & II Blocks . The SHG artisans of the District make various kinds of item in Handloom such as Salwar Kamiz set, Lungi , Sharee (machine work), Sharee (hand work) etc of various lucrative design on Tangail,silk cotton based textiles mainly through Jacquard looms where the loom is controlled by punched cards with punched holes, each row of which corresponds to one row of the design. Multiple rows of holes are punched on each card and the many cards that compose the design of the textile are strung together in order. . The products have worldwide fame mainly because of designs , textures etc. The value addition has been made on these items through our design development programme.
Wood Craft are the most attractive creations of the Skill & experienced rural artisans of Burdwan District whether traditional or modern, it may be roughly equated to the phrase “living off the lands”.Wood Craft Products are usually used as home decorative items such as Idols, Dolls , Owl , traditional King, Queen , frames (of mirror & Photo) etc . It is mainly produced in Purbasthali-II Block.
Extensive use of wood over the ages for furniture and other products has challenged the environment more than ever. This increasing need for wood has been beautifully supplemented by cane and bamboo. These eco-friendly products. These products have a high life with minimum maintenance and are at par with wood, if not better. Strips of bamboo and different utility and decorative items. Mats, lamp shades, trays, baskets are weaved and knitted by the skilled hands of our SHGs, which are very popular now. Jewelery, bags and handbags are also the other popular items of this craft. It is mainly produced in Kalna- II Block.
Dokra is one of the earliest known crafts of the civilization of non- ferrous metal casting using the lost-wax casting technique. Its mainly produced in Ausgram-I & Jamalpur Blocks. The product of Dokra artisans are in great demand in domestic and foreign markets because of primitive simplicity, enchanting folk motifs and foreceful form. Dokra horses, elephants, peacocks, owls, religious images, measuring bowls, ornaments and lamp caskets etc. of Burdwan are highly appreciated everywhere.
Beads & Crystal Ornaments are one of the beautiful creations of the rural artisans of Burdwan District .The SHG artisans of the District make various kind of light weight decorative products including ornaments. Plastic beads are made from molds and are of more light weight. Crystal beads look more attractive when these are full of cuts resembling like more expensive glass. These are mainly produced in Ausgram-I & Jamalpur Blocks.
